What is peptide therapy?
Peptide therapy is the medical use of peptides, which are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the body, to support a specific clinical goal. At a medical practice it means a licensed prescriber evaluates you, orders labs, and prescribes a peptide only when it is clinically appropriate.
Your body already makes many peptides, including insulin and several hormones. Prescription peptide medicines either copy or influence those natural signals. Because each peptide acts on a different pathway, peptide therapy is not one treatment: it is a category, and the right choice depends on your goals, your history and your labs.
FDA-approved, compounded and "research use only": what is the difference?
Peptides fall into three groups. FDA-approved peptide medicines have passed clinical trials for a specific use. Compounded peptides are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for an individual prescription and are not FDA-approved. Products sold online as "research use only" are not intended for people and are not a medical treatment.
- FDA-approved medicines have labeled uses, known dosing and documented side effects. GLP-1 medications for weight management are one example.
- Compounded preparations are made by a licensed 503A or 503B pharmacy for a specific patient. They can be appropriate in some cases, but they are not FDA-approved, and the FDA restricts which substances can be compounded.
- "Research use only" peptides are sold without a prescription and labeled not for human use. Their purity and contents are not verified for patients, and a responsible clinic will not use them.
A good provider tells you which category any option falls into before you decide.
What is peptide therapy used for?
Patients most often ask about peptide therapy for body composition, medical weight management and longevity. Some people also ask about goals such as muscle recovery or cognitive performance, where human research is limited, and your provider will tell you that plainly. Evidence differs a lot between peptides and between goals, so the conversation starts with what the research actually supports for you.
- Body composition, assessed alongside a nutrition and exercise plan
- Medical weight management, including FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for patients who meet clinical criteria
- Longevity, as one part of a broader longevity medicine plan
Who is a good candidate for peptide therapy?
A good candidate is an adult with a clear goal, recent labs and no condition that makes a given peptide unsafe. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain cancers, and some heart, kidney or endocrine conditions can rule out specific options. The only way to know is an evaluation.
Not being a candidate is a useful answer too. Sometimes labs point to a different first step, such as treating a thyroid or hormone issue, improving sleep, or adjusting medications, and that is what your provider will recommend.
What happens at a peptide consultation at Provena Care?
Your first visit is a medical consultation, not a sales appointment. A provider reviews your history, goals and medications, orders baseline labs, and then explains whether a peptide makes sense, which category it falls into, and what monitoring involves.
- Consultation: goals, history, current medications and supplements.
- Labs: baseline bloodwork to check safety and fit. See lab testing.
- Decision: if appropriate, your provider explains the option, its evidence, risks and alternatives.
- Follow-up: check-ins and repeat labs while you are on a protocol, in the office or by telehealth anywhere in Florida.
Care is provided by Dr. Victor Calvo, MD, and Aquiles Garcia-Menocal, APRN at our office at 10251 SW 72nd St, Suite 106, Miami, FL 33173, in Kendall.
Can I get GLP-1 medication for weight management?
FDA-approved GLP-1 medications may be prescribed for weight management when they are clinically appropriate. Under FDA labeling, that generally means a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes, after an evaluation and labs.
GLP-1 treatment works best inside a monitored plan that includes nutrition, protein intake, strength training and regular follow-up. Common side effects include nausea and other digestive symptoms, which your provider will discuss with you. Individual results vary. Read more in our overview of GLP-1 medications for weight management.
Is peptide therapy safe?
Safety depends on the specific peptide, its source, the dose and the person taking it. Prescribed medicines from licensed pharmacies, used after an evaluation and monitored with labs, carry far less uncertainty than products bought online. Side effects range from injection-site reactions to medicine-specific effects your provider will review with you.
Tell your provider about every medication and supplement you take, and report new symptoms at follow-up visits. Stopping or adjusting a protocol is a normal part of monitored care.
How much does peptide therapy cost in Miami?
Cost depends on the consultation, lab work, which medication is prescribed, the pharmacy that fills it, and how often you need follow-up. Many peptides are not covered by insurance, while some FDA-approved medicines may be covered when you meet your plan's criteria.

How do I choose a peptide therapy clinic?
Choose a clinic where a licensed prescriber examines you, labs come before any prescription, medications come from a licensed pharmacy, and someone follows up with you over time. Avoid anyone who sells peptides without an evaluation or offers "research use only" products.
- Is a licensed physician or nurse practitioner evaluating me in person or by telehealth?
- Do you order labs before prescribing?
- Which pharmacy fills the prescription, and is it licensed?
- Is this option FDA-approved, compounded, or neither?
- How will you monitor me, and how often?
- Can you also manage my primary care, so everything stays in one record?
Is peptide therapy legal in Florida?
Yes. Prescription peptide medicines are legal in Florida when a licensed clinician prescribes them after an evaluation and a licensed pharmacy dispenses them. The FDA limits which substances pharmacies may compound, and products sold as "research use only" are not approved for people.
That is why Provena Care prescribes only through licensed pharmacies and only when an option is clinically appropriate for you.
